Description

These Ikat Scarves are ethically handmade in Cuenca, Ecuador, with pure handwoven and hand-dyed cotton. They are carefully crafted by Maki, a certified Fair Trade social enterprise engaging indigenous female artisans in rural areas.

What is Ikat?

Ikat is a dyeing technique used to create a distinct style of textile patterns. It starts when the artisan binds individual yarns or bundles of yarns with a tight wrapping and applies the desired pattern. Then, the yarns are dyed. After that, the bindings are altered to create a new design. Finally, the yarns are dyed again with another colour. This process is repeated multiple times to produce elaborate, multicoloured patterns. When the dyeing is finished, all the bindings are removed, and the yarns are woven into cloth.
